Warm-up

Dribbling –

  • Start out dribbling on knees - Divide your players into twos.  Have partners face each other. One dribbles while the other observes. After 30 sec to a minute have them switch.  Emphasize good technique (Drill 101)
  • Move to dribbling standing. Same format (Drill 102)
  • Dribble relay.  Divide the group into two teams.  Place one cone in front of each team on the baseline.  Place another cone at the out level with the top of the key for each team.  They must dribble down and back and hand the ball off to the next in line then go and sit in the back of their line.

Passing –

  • Start out sitting across from partner on both sides of the lane (Drill 111)
  • Bounce pass -Standing bounce pass to your partner
  • Passing game – How many bounce passes can you get in one minute?

Shooting –

  • Wall shooting – Mark 2 or 3 spots on the wall with tape.  Line up students and give them 3 tries to hit the tape and then go to the end of the line. (Drill 121)
  • Spot shooting – Use cones or spots to mark 3 spaces close to the basket on the right side, middle and the left side.  Review shooting technique then line students up behind each spot to practice. (Drill 122)
  • Shooting game – Count all the makes and try to make 10 within 3 minutes or less as a team.

Defense –

  • Review a good defensive stance. 
  • Wall sit (Drill 131)
  • Practice lane slides – emphasize staying low and keeping the hands up. (Drill 132)
  • How many slides can you get in 30 seconds?

Scrimmage –

  • Have a controlled 3-on-3 scrimmage
  • Teach them to pass or shoot after they stop dribbling.
  • Remind defense to stay near their player without touching.
