Warm-up

Dribbling –

  • Stationary dribbling standing - Divide your players into twos.  Have partners face each other. One dribbles while the other observes. After 30 sec to a minute have them switch. Alternate RH and LH.  Emphasize good technique (Drill 102)
  • Over and Under Dribble relay.  Divide the group into two teams.  Place one cone in front of each team on the baseline.  Place another cone level with the top of the key for each team.  They must pass the ball over their head, then under their legs all the way down the line then the last person will dribble down and back and stop in the front of their line to repeat the over and under.

Passing –

  • Chest pass -Standing chest pass to a spot on the wall. Make sure they hit the target with good form. (Drill 112)
  • Passing game – How many times can you hit the target in one minute?

Shooting –

  • Wall shooting – Mark 2 or 3 spots on the wall with tape.  Line up students and give them 3 tries to hit the tape and then go to the end of the line. (Drill 121)
  • Spot shooting – Use cones or spots to mark 3 spaces close to the basket on the right side, middle and the left side.  Review shooting technique then line students up behind each spot to practice. (Drill 122)

Jump Stop - teach this game concept  and then play the "Red Light, Green Light game (see video "Jump Stop" on Game Concept page)

  • Dribble/Shooting game – Divide into 2 or 3 lines.  Start each  straight line at Half court.  First player on each line must dribble in to the spot and shoot.  Only one shot, get your own rebound and  dribble and pass the ball tothe next in line. Count all the makes and try to make 10  within 4 minutes or less as a whole team. (Drill 123)

Defense –

  • Review a good defensive stance
  • Review  lane slides – emphasize staying low and keeping the hands up.
  • Add quick feet drill aka "Footfire" to the drill (Drill 133)
  • Defensive game - Use hand signals to get players to slide right or left. Come forward or backwards. Clap once for footfire.  Clap twice for them to hit the deck. (Lay down to rest).

Scrimmage –

  • Have a controlled 3-on-3 scrimmage
  • Teach them to pass or shoot after they stop dribbling.
  • Remind defense to stay near their player without touching.
